Much Needed Updates

Aobo graduated with a thesis titled “Surface Chemistry of Gold Nanoparticles and Applications”.  It focussed on interesting surface chemistry insights he gained with SERS. Congrats Aobo!

Mathieu graduated with a thesis titled “Lipid Membrane Structure from Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering”.  This lead to our current focus on computational Raman of cholesterol structure. Congrats Mathieu!

We published last summer’s work by Campbell and Charles on the Raman spectra of the flavonoids.  This was a combined Experiment/DFT effort that identified Raman-active vibrations and showed that hydrogen bonds to quercetin can be simulated and are needed to accurately describe the characteristic benzopyrone-phenyl ring vibration.  Read all about it in JPCA.

We have two new folks this year:  Tia Ghandi is an undergrad working on cholesterol structure from Raman spectra, and Kyra Birkenfeld is a new graduate student working on everything (ahhh… small lab life).   Here is a “passing the torch” photo:
